Vietnam Open

For the second time in 2011, Hills District Taekwondo was invited to send a team of athletes to an International competition, this time in Vietnam. This was the first time that Hills District was represented at this tournament and our competitors performed spectacularly. Our team consisted of Michael Magee, Natalie Viscardi, Samantha Parsons and Yokk Namwongprom (Coach). Michael Magee defeated a fighter from Singapore to win a bronze medal in the semi-final match.

This tournament presented an extra challenge to our athletes, who were not only competing in an unfamiliar country, but also in heat and humidity they had never experienced while sparring. They managed to overcome the physical and mental barriers and do themselves and their club very proud in an extremely high level international tournament! The players would also like to thank Master Yokk Namwongprom for attending the tournament as the Team Coach and for her hard work throughout the competition.

Japan W.A.T.A Open Championship April 2011

Australia was represented for the very first time at the Japan W.A.T.A Open held in Osaka, Japan. Hills District Martial Arts had the distinct honour of being selected to represent both their club and their country as the entire Australian Team. For many it was their first International level tournament and it marked the first time that Hills District has ever sent an entire team to an international event. Everyone’s outcomes showed the positive results of their training with every player winning a medal in their division. The results were;

  • Natalie Viscardi – Gold
  • Jacob Neighbour – Gold
  • Samantha Parsons – Gold
  • Justin Paterson – Gold (Poomsae) and Silver (Sparring)
  • Alexandra Parsons – Silver
  • Angelo Arrastia – Bronze
  • Michael Magee – Bronze

After the competition, several awards were handed out to major achievers of the day including our own Master Sam Loiacono and Master Rion Lydon as coaches of the Australian Team. Hills District was also honoured as the Australian Squad for being the best team of the entire event and presented with a trophy that is now shown proudly at our Dojang. Special thanks from the team to Master Sam, Master Rion and Master Yok for all their hard work in preparing them and supporting them through this tournament. This is the first of many great results that the Hills District Martial Arts Sports Team is aiming for this year!

Everybody did really well and a fun day was had by all. Fitness was a concern for a couple of players, remember that running out of puff in the ring is not that good so train a bit harder to get your fitness levels up.
