On Sunday 3rd April 23 students from Hill’s District Martial Arts completed their Haidong Gumdo Grading in front of Grand Master Oh Jung Il, the President of Haidong Gumdo Australia, Master Kim from Haidong Gumdo ACT and our very own Master Sam.
Master Oh commended all the students on their holistic approach to this martial art with particular reference to their understanding of the spirituality of the sword.
All the students had to demonstrate their knowledge of patterns, step sparring and candle snuffing.
Whilst Master Oh believed that all students performed very admirably under Master Sam’s tuition he made a special commendation as follows:
Most improved since last Grading:
- Junior: Lachlan Campbell
- Senior: Justin Patterson
Following on from these outstanding displays Master Oh advised all the students that the World Championships are to be held in Korea in June 2012 with over 72 countries being invited to participate. He also suggested that most students present at the grading should aim to start saving now as they may well be eligible to participate.
Master Sam is looking forward to taking a team of students to the 2012 world championships.

Inaugural Grading For Haidong Gumdo
On the 5th of December it was Hill’s District Martial Arts distinct pleasure to receive a visit from Master Oh Jung Il, the President of Haidong Gumdo Australia. The day began with a seminar for our junior students, followed by a seminar for the seniors. Although it was a very high energy seminar on an incredibly hot day, everyone enjoyed themselves and gained new knowledge and understanding of Haidong Gumdo.
The grading began with the juniors showing off their newly acquired skills. The level of skill and concentration displayed by our young martial artists was particularly impressive, if not a little intimidating. At the conclusion of the grading Master Oh had nothing but high praise for our students and Instructor Master Sam. Master Oh remarked that “Hill’s Martial Artists were the most impressive students he had graded in Australia.” He also said that the skill level for our rank was extremely impressive.
The following students received special commendations at the end of the grading ceremony.
Best Performance Junior :
- Christian Grofski
- Callum Ide
- Dylan Foster
Best Performance Seniors :
- Jacob Neighbour
- Abby Mackay
- Cynthia Lee Murray
